Canaan is a town in Somerset County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,017 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 42.1 square miles (109 km2), of which, 41.1 square miles (106 km2) of it is land and 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) of it (2.30%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,017 people, 777 households, and 570 families residing in the town. The population density was 49.1 people per square mile (18.9/km²). There were 979 housing units at an average density of 23.8 per square mile (9.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.87% White, 0.05% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.

There were 777 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $29,397, and the median income for a family was $31,818. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $19,018 for females.
